As part of our Sixth Form Creative Arts curriculum this year, the young people at Willow Dene have been working incredibly hard to create their showcase performance, The Café at the Edge of the Woods.

Throughout the year, our Sixth Form young people develop their creative arts skills through a range of artistic disciplines, including drama, music, art and dance. They then bring together everything they have learned in the summer term to create and perform in an annual showcase at the Tramshed Arts Centre in Woolwich.

Whether performing on stage or working behind the scenes, every young person played an important role in bringing the production to life. CYP worked in a variety of groups to develop specialist skills and contribute to different aspects of the performance. The Costume and Set Design Team designed and created the deep dark wood set and costumes, while the Stage Crew and Front of House Team sourced and produced props, designed tickets and programmes, and developed valuable hospitality and customer service skills. Meanwhile, the Performance Team refined the music, dance and drama skills they had been developing since the autumn term, performing as actors, singers and drummers in the final production.

This year's show was inspired by The Café at the Edge of the Woods, one of the books explored as part of our World Book Day celebrations. The story provided endless opportunities for creativity, as students brought mystical creatures, magical landscapes and imaginative culinary creations to life. From fantastical backdrops and colourful costumes to wonderfully inventive ogre treats, the production transported audiences into a magical woodland world.

The creativity extended beyond the stage itself. The theatre foyer was transformed into an exhibition space showcasing CYP's artwork, including shoebox set designs, costume sketches and photographs documenting the creative process from concept to performance. Even the programme was designed as a menu, perfectly linking to the café theme and adding another unique touch to the audience experience.

The feedback from friends and family who attended was overwhelmingly positive. Many commented on what a magical and engaging performance it was, and how effectively it showcased the skills, creativity and confidence the young people had developed throughout the year.

It was fantastic to see our young people working so independently and being given the opportunity to truly shine. We are incredibly proud of everything they achieved and would like to congratulate all those involved in making The Café at the Edge of the Woods such a memorable success.
